- THUMBS UP FOR BOTH MACBOOK AIR AND ZENBOOK

(1) COMPUTING PERFORMANCE - First of all, in terms of the primary computing performance, including the CPU and memory performance, they're very similar, and both are very good. Asus' own tests say that the Zenbook is faster, but I don't feel much of it. This is, however, mainly because both are so fast. Comparing the speed of the CPU and memory of these two computers really has very little practical meaning. Only labs would be interested in doing that. Who is going to choose a computer over another because one opens up Microsoft Word in 1.5 seconds versus the other's 1.7 seconds? You see what I mean.

ZenBook does have much faster data transfer through its USB 3 port. It is easily multiple times faster than MacBook air's USB 2. But unless you routinely transfer very large files, I'm not sure if this is so important. Also, MacBook Air has a thunderbolt port which I've not tested in comparison with the ZenBook.

ZenBook also uses a much faster SSD (nearly twice as fast as that of the MacBook Air), but for some reason, I did not notice a very big difference in actual performance. Again, it's probably because both are already superfast for daily tasks. Gamers may tell a different story, but why do you buy an ultracompact laptop like these if you are a gamer?

(2) DESIGN AND BUILD QUALITY - Both computers are extremely well-designed and well built. To me, the ZenBook is almost a bit too pretty (a bit too showy and trendy to my taste). This is usually a problem I have with Mac products, but now, you've got a Windows product that beats that. I wish they would make a ZenBook in all black, and with a more plain business looking (but keep the feel of the high-quality and compactness). Had Lenovo made a similar machine maintaining the basic black square-edged ThinkPad style with the same compactness and thermal performance (see below), I would nearly certainly buy the ThinkPad instead. But there's nothing even in the radar screen on the ThinkPad side, so I caved in.

(3) BATTERY LIFE - The smaller ZenBook (UX21) uses a 35W battery and has 5+ hrs of battery life, comparable to that of MacBook Air. I did not do a strict test. But both are very good. The key is that both laptops would run through a whole day, even a busy day. That's what matters. Once a laptop reaches an all-day battery life, further extension of the battery life really no longer matters that much, unless of course it then reaches much longer to become days or even a week. You will be doing an overnight charging anyway. It's the mid-day recharging that brings trouble.

pros:
-very sleek looking & feeling
-sandforce ssd
-i7
-adapters, case, etc. included!
-high resolution screen
-price point, build quality
-power cable has led to indicate charging/done

cons:
-very annoying keyboard - takes a lot of getting used to - often does not register my keystrokes
-very annoying touchpad - too sensitive - requires some tweaking. installed the updated driver hopefully that will help
-no thunderbolt
-mediocre battery life - reports 3-4 hours. my dell 15z gets 6-7
-speakers are only so-so loud. nothing to go crazy about
-impossible (well, very difficult) to open with one hand.
-integrated graphics / no nvidia optimus
-could use an sd/microsd slot :(
-standard power port... apple totally wins on this one.

I have been using it for a few days now, and I also own a very powerful windows laptop and a Galaxy tab tablet.

Hardware
- No "Home", "delete" and "End" keys
- the Keyboard is awesome, much better than my $2400 Dell laptop.
- It is as light and looks very cool
- touchpad is very tough to get used to but very usable.
- Screen is very nice but not wide-angle screen though
Overall, the hardware is very solid.

Software
- no surprise here, a chrome browser with some extra such as Terminal, file manager, etc
- Boot up time is super fast.. it takes me less than 2 seconds, verus 30 seconds of my windows 7 laptop.
- cannot do much with the current web apps from web store.
- Play angry bird is nice but not as good as my galaxy tab tablet (touchscreen)

The hardware is great. The trackpad is great. The keyboard is fantastic. The size of the laptop is perfect. The battery life is beautiful. Ambient light sensor? Awesome. Webcam? HD and awesome.

Look, it's a simple notebook. Go read more about it before you buy it. See what others say. It's a great device for school. I can't imagine anything else doing what the Chromebook does in my college classes. I can leave it on (with the screen on) for all day in class and look up stuff and type notes in Springpad/Google Docs all while being on Google+ talking to friends and monitoring my text messages from Google Voice in the browser via the extension.

I was instantly able to type at full speed on it. I'd also like to add that the island keys are pretty sweet. I read A LOT of reviews that complained about the track pad. Some of these were based on an earlier prototype Google used to develop the chromebooks. Others were specifically for this product. I, personally, like the track pad. It took me about 10 minutes to get used to it. What makes it different is it's lack of buttons and clickable surface. You actually press down on the pad and can feel it 'click'. You have to use a couple of fingers to scroll and drag items, but after minimal practice I thought it became pretty natural.

I purchased the X220 from the Lenovo website in May 2011 when it first became available. There were some 20% - 30% deals back then but I think the price is always hovering around $1000 no matter what website you buy it from.

The model I got is very close to the model on this page - i7 processor, IPS display, bluetooth, 4GB DDR3 RAM and slightly smaller hard drive. I'm not sure if it's mentioned here, but I also upgraded the wifi card from the basic Lenovo one to one of the Intel cards.

My previous laptop was the 5 year old IBM x41, so maybe this review is a little biased for Lenovo Thinkpads. I enjoyed using the x41, but it was becoming too slow loading up web pages, the hard drive was too small (30GB) and it ran out of batteries too fast. I was actually looking to upgrade in 2009 but I didn't find a laptop meeting my requirements. I knew I wanted a dual-core processor and SSD drive. Eventually the list grew to USB 3.0 and DDR3. When Intel announced the next gen of dual-core processor (i3, etc.) and I saw what everyone was saying about it, I decided to wait for that to come out. My recent acquisition was the X220 Laptop. So far so good, no complaints whatsoever. I like its size, the speed and the fingerprint reader. While it took me a while to learn how to use windows 7 (previously I used XP) I am pretty much at home now with the laptop. The one drawback is that it doesn't have a CD/DVD reader, which is a minor annoyance but there are ways to get around that. Maybe in one year's time I will come back and give more view on this.

I bought mine from Apple Store the day it was released as Amazon didn't have it yet.

Processor - When compared to my 3 week old Early 2011 edition there I barely experience any difference in performance (2.3 GHz v/s 2.4 GHz).

Hard disk - The new editions gives you more hard disk space (500GB instead of 320GB) but time has taught me never to trust an internal hard disk. I always use a backup hard disk to store important files at all times. So, the hard disk capacity really doesn't matter to me.

Issues I have encountered so far on the Late 2011 Edition (new one):

Fan noise: The fan made a constant hissing noise in the background. So, I took it back to the apple store and they narcissist genius bar staff) fixed it by resetting the fan at boot up.
(Beware, their staff could send you back making you feel that only they know what a computer is. I had the staff telling me older version did not make the fan noise cause it is a "different" computer. Yeah, of course smarty pants "fix it now")

Software - Compared to the early 2011 edition I did see inbuilt applications crashing and it prompted me to send the report to Apple (which I promptly did).I think this will happen to any new version of computer/phone released and I need to wait for the next set of updates to have all of this fixed. I will be patient for few months.

I've found that most of the complaints others have had about such things as the keyboard and small touchpad are minor. Every computer feels different and simply takes getting accustom to. Let me address a few of these things now. I either still own or have tried 17, 15, 13 and 10 inch laptops from Dell, HP, Acer and Mac. Every one of them has their good and bad points and takes practice especially on the keyboard. Every time I switch to another computer, I have to be aware of the slightly different layout and key sizes then readjust my typing as not to hit the wrong keys too often.

I've tried a 10 inch notebook but found it just a little too small. Even this Timeline at times seems too small on the print or online. So, I just simply zoom in when need be.

As for the small touchpad, I haven't had a problem with it. Most of the time I use a wireless mouse in combination with the touchpad. It's just as I've said before, it takes practice and patience to get the hang of it.

I bought this little wonder to use in the field. I needed something small, lightweight, long battery life yet powerful. This laptop fit the bill perfectly. I also have an extremely heavy 17 inch that I actually use on my lap. This Acer Timeline has the same specs as my main laptop. So, now I am considering using this Acer as my main everyday computer.

I'm a photojournalist who looked long and hard to find a replacement for my old 10" Sony Vaio laptop. I need a computer I can leave in the car trunk or carry in a fanny pack while shooting assignments, so it has to be tough, compact and powerful. The Acer Aspire TimelineX AS1830T-68U118 solved the problem of cramming near-desktop power into a Netbook-sized package. I've only had it for a few days, but here are my first impressions:

EXTERIOR:

1. Not as pretty as a Macbook Air, but what is? It also costs less.
2. The tough exterior has a nice texture that is easy to grip and shrugs off fingerprints. The Acer power brick weighs just seven ounces; half the size and weight of my old Vaio's.
3. The 11.6" glossy screen looks great so long as you view it "on axis." The Acer runs at 1366 by 768, 32 bit, 60 Hertz. The 128 MB dedicated video memory is a bottleneck if you are a gamer or want to do video editing. The frame contains a user-facing web cam and mike.
4. Unlike the MacBook Air, the compact TimeLineX AS1830T is loaded with three USB 2.0 ports, a HDMI port, an old-style VGA monitor socket and a built-in multi-card reader. It will take SD cards, but not CF cards.
5. There is no built-in optical drive. No PCMCIA slot.
6. People complain about the touch pad and buttons; they're right. I forgot my mouse yesterday and it was marginally less painful than smashing my forehead against the keyboard until I pass out. I'll NEVER forget to bring a mouse again!

UNDER THE HOOD:

1. The powerful i7-680UM processor is a rarity in computers this size. It easily runs high-end programs under Win 7 64 bit Home Premium with Service Pack 1.
2. It comes with 4 GB of DDR3 RAM. I bumped this up to 8 gigabytes, but honestly, I couldn't see much difference. It's just that RAM is so cheap!
3. It has WiFi, Bluetooth and Ethernet connectivity. I haven't used the Bluetooth, so can't say much about it. I test-connected to the internet with my Android cellphone using two methods: as a WiFi hotspot and using PdaNet with a USB tether. Easy--no issues.
4. This Acer contains a roomy 500 GB hard drive. Curiously, they chose a slower 5400 RPM HD, though it seems fine. I assume they opted for it to maximize battery life.

5. Which brings us to the TimelineX AS1830T remarkable battery life! I spent half the day continuously loading software, updates, rebooting, testing and interfacing my programs. Even with the WiFi on and the screen at maximum brightness, the Acer still had a few gasps of power after five hours of heavy lifting! There was a little bloatware, though not as bad as most computers.

It looks good, it's quiet and cool (I mean temperature). Before I bought this I read all the reviews available online. I completely understand the reviewers have to criticize something but for me this computer works perfectly well. For example, many people say that the keys are too short. In my opinion the keys are comfy. The screen is not the best, but it's very good. This is not a gamer computer; it's for the ones that need to carry it from one place to the other. Taking into account its size and weight, I couldn't expect more from this machine. I come from a ThinkPad that is a heavy duty. I can see this computer is not as strong as the ThinkPad, but it's on a different league if you take into account the price you pay for one of the smallest computers available. The Graphics are excellent. The procesessor is adequate. The power supply is the standard one, so you can use any standard aspire 3.42 volt adapter. The keyboard is not perfect, but better than the iconia touchscreen. The best bang for your buck if you need a second laptop or like to travel light.
Battery life is not 6 hours - more like 3.5 on power saver - which is adequate.

If you're coming in from the Desktop or casual dual core laptop that did the job, you're in for a most pleasant surprise. We all knew it was just a matter of time before the laptops of yesterday got more portable, lightweight and powerful. The Acer S3 did it with class. I got mine a few weeks ago and began to load the 320 gig hard drive with all my "stuff" from an older Gateway laptop through the on-board system transfer software. After completion I began to test some of the largest spreadsheets and power graphic projects I have been working on and they all excelled faster, clearer and with less wait time during conversions than before, and it barely put a dent in the hard drive space. It also boasts a 20 gig solid state drive.

I set this computer up on a home network, and was pleasantly surprised at the ease if was to operate, once I configured the display so I could read it. Streaming video via internet was smooth. Downloaded and installed all new updates in about 15 minutes.

The keyboard is solid, easy enough to navigate. The touchpad is a little different, solid plastic, not LCD. So I did install a wireless mouse to make it easier for Mom to surf. She's having fun learning what all the new little icons stand for on Win 7 Home Premium, instead of the older XP. Still prefers the old look of Solitaire over this one.

Overall, with the included features, like the DVD/CD burner, 3 USB ports, the built-in webcam, 250 GB hard drive, built-in card reader, and wireless networking, I'm pleased with this computer. and Mom loves it, too.

very good product
very good performance
speed is very good
not that bad
battery life isnt that great so i had to lower screen brightness
gets excellent reception
very good keyboard
if your hands perspire this computer leaves markes and spots

The G770 has done everything that was asked of it. It has a great display, good keyboard, flawless networking, fast processor with the kind of boot speed enhancing software now standard for advanced processors. No problem with the large 750 gb drive that came with it. The configured 4GB of memory performed quite adequately for Windows Home Premium and short of using it for a server or massive video editing should be adequate for what most humans do with a computer. Have thought of upgrading to Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, but other than Remote Desk into it cannot see why to take the time.

I am mildly concerned about the plastic hinges that couple the cover to the body. But this is not meant for heavy duty travel, but you want a Thinkpad class machine for that. As a desktop replacement it does appear to have Lenovo's touch for quality manufacturing. Also, it has some but not excessive extraneous software. I personally consider Lenovo's own version of file sharing software to be dubious, or any manufacturer's version of the same, and simply don't use it.

The laptop weighed much less than I thought it would. Only slightly more than my smaller Toshiba.
The screen is large, sharp and bright.
The aluminum bronzy brown finish is very cool
Speaking of cool, this laptop runs extremely COOL & QUIET. I often finding myself checking that its still on. If you work mainly with your laptop in your lap, you'll love how cool this laptop stays.
The Core i5 performs superb. Fast and capable of several large programs simultaneously without trouble.
The HDMI connection has already come in handy.
The keyboard has excellent response and finish.
