Reviews Sony Bravia XBR KDL-70XBR7 HDTV

Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA)
DLNA logodlna daisy chainAll 2008 XBR and Z-Series BRAVIA HDTVs are DLNA-compliant.

You already know something about digital living. There’s the TV and digital video recorder in your family room. (And another set in your bedroom.) You have a PC and digital printer in your office, along with a network attached storage device. And you’ve copied all your music onto your portable music player and haven’t had to open a CD case for years. But getting them to talk to each other can be pretty tough. Why is it still so difficult to send digital content from one device to another?

Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) is a collaboration of the world’s leading consumer electronics, PC and mobile companies that has created design guidelines for a new generation of products that can work together — no matter the brand.

Think for a moment about all of the photos “locked away” on your home PC that you wish you could access while entertaining your friends and family. Now, thanks to DLNA enabled devices, a DLNA-enabled PC can be accessed from the comfort of your living room or family room via a DLNA-enabled HDTV, where you can enjoy your memories with friends and family, without having to deal with the hassle and non-intuitive “PCexperience”.

Or, say you recently downloaded your daughter’s birthday party video from your digital camcorder to your PC. Now you want to share it with your parents who are visiting. Without DLNA, you probably have to burn a DVD of the video or hook up the camcorder to the TV. With DLNA, you can just use your TV’s remote to call up the video on your TV. That’s it.

Live Color Creation
Many colors in the real world such as deep reds, greens and clear blues cannot be expressed with conventional display technologies. Live Color Creation technology achieves wide color reproduction using advanced chroma signal processing algorithms. The primary benefits are clear blues, natural greens and an overall vibrant color for all scenes.

Optimized Theater Mode
Developed in consultation with the Sony Pictures Entertainment movie studio, most 2008 Sony BRAVIA LCD HDTVs feature our optimized Theater Mode. Selecting the THEATER mode on the BRAVIA HDTV remote automatically adjusts a number of key elements that have an important impact on reproducing movies better. Skin tones and lighting are seen as natural without over-enhancing color and contrast. The picture is fine-tuned for a dark viewing environment just like the cinema and optimized for LCD display technology. Even the right amount of film grain is included. All of this helps preserve the mood and detail so you enjoy the cinema
experience that you go to the theater to see, right in the comfort of your home.

Optimized Theater Mode is another great example of Sony HDNA in action. We not only create the exciting movies that you see at the cinema but also enhance the home viewing experience to
recreate it as only Sony can.

There are larger TV sets out there, but the 120" Philips LED display has a pathetic resolution and the 150" Panasonic weighs about as much as the Ferrari you could buy instead. Actually, the Panasonic does at least have a sensible use - as a cinema screen.

Buy with pride and think not that you could buy the 60" less than a fifth the price and use the remainder to build a health clinic or school in a deprived part of the world and put a picture of it on your wall instead. One advantage of that approach is that with no sound to turn off, its a lot easier to ignore.

Reviews KDL-40W5100 Sony BRAVIA W-Series HDTV

This is a great buy I have several LCDs HD around the house and did my research before this buy. The video quality is great. Clear and vivid colors. Motionflow is a plus, great for sports. Movies look great especially Bluray on 1080p. The picture looks like its going to pop out of the screen. This tv has great features as you can see, plus the xcross feature is sleek. You can watch Youtube on the tv; program weather, stock and news widgets plus tweeter and more to come (must have a broadband connection). You can also connect to your home network to access movies, pictures and music from your computer(s) to watch on your tv.

Originally I planned on getting the 40" Z series last year. But when the new models came out this year, the 40" W series offered everything I was looking for a little bit cheaper price. It has a good looking profile and was a snap to set-up. I used the Cheetah tilting mount that I also purchased from amazon. Don't let anyone fool you. The Cheetah mount is just as good or better than the expensive mounts. I already had a ps3 so the XMB menu system was very familiar. This is a great tv for the money.

The only con I can think of is that the remote doesn't have a 1 button sleep timer. You have to go through the menus.

Reviews Toshiba Mini NB205-N325PK Netbook

The user manual is a file on the internal disk so learning how to find my way around the laptop and Windows 7 was a challenge but I doubt if any computers come with a hard copy user manual anymore. I called Qwest to get help configuring my DSL modem for wireless and they even helped me with the laptop. It only took a few minutes to get it all working. I have had no problem with the netbook and am very happy with my purchase. I had considered the ASUS for a long time but the negative customer reviews regarding the AC adapter/charger and their customer service convinced me the Toshiba was a better choice. I don't think it's fair to give the Toshiba a bad review based on Windows 7 Starter. Toshiba doesn't make Windows and all the netbooks with Windows 7 Starter will have the same restrictions.

Even with the standard 1GB of RAM, the unit performs great, and battery life is on the order of 7 hours or more. As far as fit and finish goes, I compared similar units and this one has the best in it's price range, especially the keyboard -- doesn't feel flimsy at all, and the almost full size mouse pad is a plus.

Build quality is solid as you would expect from Samsung. Screen is matte not glossy which I also like. Very little bloatware to remove. I bought this for my wife who travels and has to give powerpoint presentations. Needless to say she loves this little thing. It will certainly make her travel easier, as this netbook is so small and light(2.8 Lbs). It is a simple netbook; doesn't come with all the bells and whistles, like bluetooth, 1.3 camera, etc. The wifi card found my AT&T Uverse device quickly, so I was on the internet immediately. Battery life is as advertised; it took me about 6 hours to run it down from initial full charge.

I have got this HP notebook due to the software I need to use. I usually use Mac and like its stability and smoothness. When I used windows (it was windows Me and XP) years ago, it was not really a good experience... But this time is different. Windows 7 works solid and reliable. The machine is fast enough for its price, and I was surprised how light it weighs. If you carry your computer around, this is nice. You cannot complain about this machine since it deserves credit for its functionality, reliability and the price cost. For average user like me, this is good.

My Mac OS impressions:

The biggest thing I missed from Windows at first was the task bar. Mac uses the "dock" to replace the task bar. The dock is kind of like the quick launch toolbar in Windows spread out across the entire bar, with large icons. Having used windows with a task bar for the past 13 years, I missed the ability to see all open programs and switch between them with the task bar. The dock has a tiny dot below the icon on running-programs, but nothing else to separate it from other program and folder icons. The dock is not nearly as useful for multitasking as the task bar.

The saving grace that rescues the Mac from awkward app-switching while multitasking is called expose. Expose is activated by either pressing a key or using a multitouch gesture (four-finger swipe). Expose uses the entire screen to display all open windows and allow you to switch between them. It's like alt+tab on steroids. Having used the machine for a couple weeks, I miss using expose when I use my Windows machine. As much as I hated the dock at first, I have to give the advantage to the Mac for managing multiple windows while multitasking.

The controls for open-windows are quite different than in MS-Windows. In Mac, there is a resize, hide, and minimize button instead of maximize, minimize, restore, and close. To close an app on the mac you need to use a menu command or keyboard shortcut. The Mac resize button kind of works like restore/maximize, only it's a bit more awkward. A commenter here pointed out that it resizes the window for ideal viewing without using the entire screen. I find myself resizing windows by dragging corners more than I ever did on a Windows machine. I really miss the ability to maximize, if for no other reason but to avoid distractions. The green resize button may be better on an enormous monitor, but not on a 13" notebook. When you minimize or hide an app on the Mac, it is only available from the dock and is hidden from expose. I'll give the window size-management advantage to Windows in this contest. The windows system is just easier and more logical in my opinion. It isn't a deal-breaker, but I do miss the Windows "window controls." If you are a frequent user of the F11 key while web browsing in Windows you'll have to kiss that feature goodbye. Neither Firefox nor Safari will go full-screen.

Windows Explorer is "replaced" with an app called Finder. Finder is kind of like the start menu and an explorer window all rolled up into one. Compared with older versions of Windows, finder is adequate but Vista's explorer is quite a bit easier and more logical to use. I prefer Vista's preview pane to Mac's coverflow. I miss the "up folder" button. I have found myself mostly using the view that puts files, folders and apps into a column view for easiest computer browsing, and it just isn't as elegant as Windows Vista. The lack of a maximize button has caused frustration especially in the finder, because the finder likes to stay in a very small window unless you drag the corners.

This was a Birthday present for my wife who has an old (in computer time) Dell desktop running XP - slow but satisfactory. Research began with a Toshiba Netbook which she liked but not as a primary computer - small screen, no optical drive. We then moved to Best Buy where she looked and tried a broad range of Laptops- settling on this Sony and a Toshiba (she had a Toshiba laptop 10 years ago). Back home we researched both with help from Amazon's wide selection. The next morning she said did you order the Sony from Amazon? Yes, and Amazon did their part - swiftly.

She is pleased with her choice, likes the feel of the keyboard, appearance of the screen and the 64 bit version of Windows 7, and, of course, the speed. The file migration is just beginning so I'm sure she will find many other features to praise. For myself, a refugee from MS, it feels like a MacBook!

Reviews AS1410-2039 Aspire Acer Laptop

As a small internet business owner, I needed a laptop that is portable and reliable. I originally started looking at the 10" netbooks, but found them to be too small and I hated that they only ran the Windows 7 Starter version which has some major restrictions. This 11.6" laptop has a decent size screen and a nice size keyboard. I was deciding between this and the HP, but when you customize the HP to have all the same specs as this Acer, the cost was over $800 so this became a no-brainer.

I've had my Acer for about 1 month now and it is great. Windows 7 takes a little getting used to, but I've had no issues with it at all. I hooked it up to a wireless network printer without incident and it wasn't loaded with a ton of garbage-ware. My only issue was that it only comes with the student/home trial version of MS Office, and I am an Outlook user. The entire office suite is expensive, so instead I tried Mozilla Thunderbird which is free and it works just as well as Outlook. Once my trial period for the MS Office software is up, I will purchase it for only $149 and keep Thunderbird as my email client which will save me a pretty penny.

Reviews DV6-1354US Laptop HP Pavilion

Transition from XP to Windows 7 was intuitive. The new taskbar is my favorite improvement. Followed by much better graphic interface and widgets. Some of my XP software causes Windows 7 to turn off Aero mode. I feel that windows has caught up with Apple in terms of graphics and workflow.

As far as laptop is concerned, Dave from Portland has a great review comparing the different models available on Amazon. The DV6-1354US is sufficient for me to use Adobe Photoshop and Audition, as well as multitask.

I will never go to a laptop again without a numeric keypad, this was an unexpected plus. I do miss the old HP media controls above the keyboard. They are replaced now by a volume and wireless control. I like that they are no longer buttons but touch sensitive surfaces above the keyboard.

The DV6 is quieter and cooler than my old HP. The power cord is beefier, which was always a problem with my old HP. Although I would prefer a magnetic power cord like Apple offers. Compared to other manufacturers, I would have to say that HP has the best price for great, reliable hardware.

Everything is a wonderful improvement except for the sound. Frequently, friends would ask where the music was coming from when I used my old DV1000. I felt that the sound was very rich for such a small system. I find the DV6 to have a much shallower, smaller sound that finds trouble filling a bedroom.

Reviews MacBook MC207LL/A Laptop

Pros:

- Unibody enclosure
- Same battery as the MacBook Pro
- Same graphics and processor (low end) of 13" MBP
- Glass multi-touch trackpad
- 250GB Hard Drive (bigger than entry level MBP)
- DDR3 RAM
- LED Backlit Display
- SuperDrive
- New AC Adapter (I just like it better. Basically the same as a MB Air's)
- Snow Leopard
- Price

Cons:

- No backlit keyboard
- Bezel around the display isn't as "refined" and the edge to edge glass on the MBP
- No Firewire. Isn't that big for current products as most things are going USB, but legacy items and high transfer rates of Firewire 800 or sustained throughput of 400 would have been nice.
- Battery is non-removable. Again, could be a big deal for some.
- "Non-slip" bottom is rather slippery and tends to gather crud easily, but then again, it's easy to wipe clean
- While I would surely say that the new case is more pro than con (looks better, doesn't get dirty as easily, fingerprints rub right off) that high gloss is rather easy to scratch.
- Finally, this is more neutral than con, I would have liked to have seen a $50 price drop, putting this machine for students and educators, who make up a sizable chunk of Apple's target demographic, at $899. With everything that has changed on this machine, I can see why it didn't happen.

Reviews 1005HA-PU17-BU ASUS Eee PC

Pro:

- Battery life is incredible and recharges in an hour (max): I did some light web-surfing for a couple hours one night and had 82% of battery left when I was done. UPDATE: I watched a 45 min. episode of Mad Men that I downloaded and it only used up about 10% of the battery. Pretty awesome.

- Size is great: about the size of a hardcover novel.

- Weight is much better: half the weight of my MacBook Pro, the same weight as my girlfriend's MacBook Air.

- Price point is right: I got mine for $387 and feel like anything $400 or less is a fair price for what you get.

- Screen is small, crisp, and clear: Larger would be easier to see, but small is the point of a netbook, right?

- Windows 7 Starter is adequate: Not sluggish, even with 4 windows open at a time. I'm still getting re-familiarized with the Windows 7 file structure and how you install applications, etc, but that's not a fault of Windows 7.

- Nice look and feel. Very compact and handy computer, almost the size of a book. It can even fit into one of my jackets.

- Great keyboard, almost as good as normal keyboard. It only took my a few hours to get used to the keyboard. However, I am still not using many of the keyboard features/short cuts and it will take a few days before I can fully master it.

- Great battery life, not 10.5 hours as claimed but definitely 7-8 hours of regular use. I never worry about having to charge the computer and this is more than what I needed/expected.

Reviews 1005HA-PU1X-BK ASUS Eee PC

For the first week I used Windows XP, which came preinstalled on the system. Web browsing, email, word precessing all work acceptably. Hula and Netflix (in Standard Definition) have some minor video jitters (slight pauses), but the audio is OK. However, the video jitter makes this unusable for me as a video viewing device. Don't even think about trying to watch an HD feed, the video is too jumpy. Standard Definition YouTube works well. The video issue is a limitation of the CPU, as you can see the CPU spikes at 100% on Hulu, Netflix, etc.

The screen is small, only 1024 x 600. You know this going in, but I still find it hard to navigate new web pages. If it is a web site that I know well, then I don't have too much of a problem.

The keyboard is generous for a netbook, but I still have some trouble typing on it. I do not touch type in the traditional way, but I do type without looking at my fingers. They keyboard takes some getting used to, but even still, I could not write a novel on this.

For the last week I have been running the unit as a Hackintosh (running Apple OS X Snow Leopard). Check the insanelymac dot com forums for details on how to install Snow Leopard on this. You have to switch out the wireless card (I used a Dell 1510 card, about $35 from dell). Switching out the card involves taking the netbook apart and voiding the warranty. You have been warned. Having said that, this little machine runs Snow Leopard pretty well! It still has the same issues with Hulu and Netflix video playback though.

I have not had any issues with the power adapater. However, I have been unplugging the adapter from the wall socket once the netbook is charged. The power brick gets very, very, very hot. The manual warns of this, but this is the hottest I have ever had a power brick for a computing device get. I can see why so many people are getting power brick failures. It needs to be re-engineered.

I still give this thing 4 starts, why? Because it does pretty much what is advertised, and if you read the reviews, then you know what you are getting going in. Before I had this in my hands I thought about getting a second one to replace my wife's aging dell laptop. I'm glad I didn't. When people say this is good for a second or third computer, listen to them. This is not acceptable for a primary computer. The screen is just too small.

Pros:
-------

- The 1005HA-P comes with all the features you want in a netbook. Some ppl may prefer a higher resolution screen but I don't think it's required.
- It's thinner than the 1000HE, although it seems to be as heavy.
- I think the new keyboard rivals the great hp mini keyboards. The full size right shift key was enough for me to drop my 1000HE.
- The best thing about this unit is the battery life. Don't hold your breath for getting 10 whole hours though. Expect 7-8 hours with wifi and Bluetooth on in power save mode. I expect to get 6-7 hours in high performance mode.
- Windows 7 works like a charm.

Reviews 1005HA-PU17-BK Eee PC ASUS

Strengths:

- Reading the reviews of the 1005HA Win XP model, I was hesitant to purchase any Eee netbook model, fearing issues with the power adapter. Upon vigorous daily use, I have had no issues with the power adapter at all.

- The keyboard layout is comfortable and the keys are a manageable size, with the exception of the UP/Down arrow keys. I like to scroll through web pages using the arrow keys; both keys are small for my average sized fingers.

- The netbook's performance is more than adequate for my needs, which includes word processing, web surfing, email, and watching video files. Note that if you are considering this model to watch high def video (1080p), this is not for you. Refer to an ION based netbook, like the HP Mini 311 or the Eee PC 1201N.

- Compared to the advertised battery life of 10.5 hours, my battery usage ranged at approximately 8 hours, using a "balanced" power scheme.

Weaknesses:

- 1GB RAM is not enough, and this computer is significantly slower than my regular computer. Not sure why they don't bring it with 2GB RAM. In last 4-5 days, I had to use task manager a few times to close non-responding programs. I have noticed that if I open more than 4-5 windows, my internet browser (Firefox) will freeze.

- Resolution is bad, you have to scroll down every single web page. I hope they can come up with better resolution within the same screen size.

- They make a 500 GB online storage claim which is actually just a trial which feels misleading. I have tried to set it up but couldn't easily figure out the program.

Summary
The netbook uses the GMA950 integrated graphic chip. You can overclock these with the GMA Booster to 400MHz. I also read the netbook is stable if overclock to 1.9GHz, but I haven't tried it. The Eee Super Hybrid Engine which controls the preset power modes do adjust CPU clock speeds depending on mode. If you plan on upgrading memory, I suggest you spend the extra $3 for the 800Mhz FSB module which is more compatible when in super high performance mode.

Windows 7 runs pretty good on this netbook. The starter edition doesn't seem at all limited to me. I'm able to get around the wallpaper limitation and connect to my home network easily with desktops using Vista. I am just glad Windows 7 starter's run 3 applications limit wasn't imposed, it would have been the deal breaker. Wikipedia has a list of what isn't available in this edition and to me, it isn't worth spending extra to upgrade to the next edition.
